P... is for a Purpose-Driven Life

I will be writing a 4-part series on cultivating more Purpose, Calling and Mission in your life. Below is part 1 of 4 on Purpose...

Ah… the journey of life.

Ever feel like you’re just drifting—like you’re existing but not really living? Maybe you’ve asked yourself:

“What’s my purpose in life? Why am I here? What’s the point of my existence?”

There’s no need to overthink it, in fact I’ll tell you right now:

👉Your purpose is to be human.

Think about it:

What’s the purpose of a fork? To be stabbed into food and put into a mouth.

What’s the purpose of a car? To get someone from point A to point B.

So then… what’s the purpose of a human?

The Bible offers a suggestion in Ephesians 1:4 that was groundbreaking for its time and still is today:

“Even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.”

Ephesians 1:4

If you believe in a God, then by definition, that God created you, and thought you up before He created you.

In other words, before the foundations of the world, of the universe, were established, He chose you, and created you in his image.

If that’s true, then the purpose of a human being is to be an image-bearer of God. To take the raw materials of the earth and make something new.

To grow, to love, to create, to reflect beauty, to seek truth, to feel deeply, to live fully.

There are infinite ways to describe what it means to be human, but I think you get the idea.

As a human being, your purpose is to be human.

So… What Gets in the Way of Us Being Human?

If we go back to the car example—when you take a car to the mechanic, they check a bunch of things:

Is the engine working? Is the alignment off? Are the tires deflated?

What’s the equivalent checklist for us?

Start here:

💪 Physical: Are you sleeping well? Eating decently? Moving your body? Is there anything your body’s been trying to tell you that you’ve been ignoring?

🧠 Mental: Is your mind scattered? Unable to focus? Do you have adequate levels of self-control (not doing something when you want to) and self-discipline (doing something when you don’t want to)?

❤️ Emotional: Are you carrying unresolved pain? Old wounds that still need tending? Inner-child stuff that hasn’t fully healed?

🕯️ Spiritual: When’s the last time you felt a sense of wonder? Do you still see beauty in the small things? Are you connected to something greater than yourself?

Assess where you’re not human-ing and adjust!

You don’t have to have every category at 100%. That’s not the point.

But when one area is severely off, there’s a good chance it’s affecting your ability to be human.

And if something is off… that’s okay!

Addressing that area of deficiency is purposeful in and of itself. That means you’re living, and being human.

So, Where Do You Start?

If you’re feeling a little lost or disconnected lately, try asking yourself:

👉 Where am I not human-ing right now?

Here are a few more questions to help you explore where your human-ness might be calling out for more attention.

  • Have I been treating my body like a machine or like a vessel for life?

  • When’s the last time I felt truly alive in my body—light, free, energized?

  • Am I spending more time reacting or reflecting?

  • What am I feeding my mind daily—noise or nourishment?

  • Is there a feeling I’ve been avoiding because I don’t want to feel it?

  • When’s the last time I made something just for the joy of it?

These are good places to begin.

Stay tuned for part 2 on calling.

With curiosity,
Eric
